The Subaru Impreza has been around since the early 1990s and although it has taken many family-friendly forms it has also got a hardcore following which it won thanks to the various high performance editions which have claimed victories in numerous rally championships over the years. There have been three distinct generations of the Impreza WRX STi and although WRX has now been dropped from the naming system the spec sheet and performance figures still make very impressive reading.
Between 1992 and 2001 the first generation of the Impreza took many different guises, with special editions and engine tweaks changing the performance, although around 250 to 270bhp was a rough average for power output. Turbocharging a 2 litre engine was one of the key factors that allowed so much power to be pushed out whilst staying within rally regulations.
A completely overhauled version of the Impreza was launched in 2001, with the wheels and gearbox being totally replaced and many other aspects refined and honed. 270bhp was the most common power output for the Impreza range, although in 2004 a 300bhp model arrived and was followed by a 315bhp powerhouse the next year, although this was only available in certain regions.
In 2008 the new hatchback update to the Impreza series arrived, bringing with it over 300bhp of power for the STi version and a style alteration which was not looked upon with great fondness by many of the series faithful. However it remains a popular rally car and the performance has not been dampened as time progresses.
Adding an intercooler to a Subaru Impreza is a sure-fire way to up the brake horsepower if you have the turbocharged edition of the vehicle or its variants. An intercooler works by removing the heat created by turbochargers and superchargers which can hamper the achievable power levels. Depending on the brand you choose, it will be able to significantly increase the power of your vehicle, sometimes to over 350bhp.
It is always important to remember when selecting an intercooler for your Subaru Impreza that you will have to make sure that what you are buying is compatible with your particular vehicle. Since there are so many variations across this range and engine sizes vary between 2 and 2.5 litres, it is essential that you buy a part that is right for you. It is quite possible for you to buy kits which come with detailed instructions on how to install the intercooler yourself. But if you are unsure you should always seek expert advice. An intercooler installed by an expert will retain the value of your vehicle and make sure that
cheap car sales do not limit the return on your investment when the time comes to sell.
